Career in Biotechnology and microbiology

Career in Biotechnology and microbiology

Biotechnology
It is a specific area of study and work which involves the use of micro organic plant and animal cells to provide materials and manufacture of substances such as food, medicine and chemical which can be used by man in his daily life. It is an interdisciplinary science which encompasses the study of subjects ranging from Biology, physics, chemistry and Math. It also deals with genetic information in animals and plants so that they are beneficial to human beings. It is also concerned with Industrial bio wastes management.  From agriculture to industry (chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, and textiles) conservation of environment, nutrition – all have been influenced by the biotechnological progress. The nature of Work of biotechnologists, being interdisciplinary, requires working together of people from different fields such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, engineering, food science, agriculture etc. Some of the fields where biotechnology studies are applicable are as follows.
 1    MEDICINE AND HEALTH CARE.
2    INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
3    AGRICULTURE AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY
4    ENVIRONMENT
Candidates having background in science at the intermediate level can take up:·
B.Tech in Biotechnology.
P.G. courses available are
M.Sc. Biotechnology
 M.Sc. (Agriculture) Biotechnology
 M.V.Sc. (Animal) Biotechnology
 M.Tech. Biotechnology,
 M.Sc./M.V.Sc. Veterinary Biotechnology
 M.Sc. (Marine) Biotechnology
 Medical Biotechnology
 M.Tech. in Biomedical Engineering/Biotechnology.
Depending upon the aptitude and necessity, more advanced courses such as   Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral Research in Biotechnology can also be pursued.
Microbiology
Microbiologist study tiny life forms, such as algae, protozoa, bacteria, viruses, moulds, and yeast. Medical or Clinical microbiologist play a major part in finding ways to identifying, preventing and treating infectious disease. Other microbiologists specialize in agricultural, environmental, food and industrial microbiology. It’s a vast subject with many areas of specialization.
Eligibility
The candidates who have passed 12 or equivalent with Biology or Mathematics as one of their subjects can opt for under graduate courses. For post graduate courses the students who have passed B.Sc with Life Science/microbiology are eligible. The people with scientific and analytical temper, aptitude for research, high observation power, perseverance, prefer studying microbiology. Microbiology is regarded as a research oriented field .
